HUB Ocean at the Villars Institute

HUB Ocean team is back from an exciting two-day stay at The Villars Institute in Switzerland.

Day 1: We concentrated on the vibrant sphere of citizen science, envisioning how to harness the knowledge and passion of Mercuria’s 500+ seafarers to gather valuable and relevant ocean data. Our workshop facilitated insightful dialogues with the Swiss Polar Institute to explore data sharing from the new FOREL polar research vessel (a 100ft sailboat and floating laboratory packed with sensors). Additionally, we were introduced to the initiatives undertaken by researchers from the Università Politecnica delle Marche, particularly their synergies with Reef Check Mediterranean and the diving community.

Day 2: We joined a roundtable dedicated to Nature Based Solutions (NBS) and Natural Climate Solutions (NCS). The event brought together a diverse group of professionals from industry, finance, carbon accounting, NGOs, and social sciences, fostering a rich discussion of ideas and perspectives. Through a series of facilitated sessions, we covered important subjects such as:

— Identifying pivotal levers and opportunities for NCS
— Scaling nature restoration effectively and sustainably
— Evaluating the commercial ramifications of nature restoration
— Navigating the political landscape surrounding nature restoration.

As we look back on the vibrant discussions and collaborations of the past two days, we can't help but say a big thank you to Mercuria and The Villars Institute. Their support in fostering a space where innovative ideas can flourish has been invaluable. We are excited to see the promising developments that are sure to arise from these combined efforts!
